This past year marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Black Panther Party. In The Revolution Has Come: Black Power, Gender and the Black Panther Party in Oakland, Robyn C. Spencer traces the Party’s evolution, centering women’s experiences their contributions to the Panthers and the Black Power movement as a whole. The new, expanded edition of Mumia Abu-Jamal’s We Want Freedom provides an account of daily Party life alongside an analysis of the tradition of Black resistance. Both books offer a rich historical analysis that provide us with the political backdrop to consider the lessons and the legacy of the Black Panther Party and what this means for contemporary movements for Black liberation.
