Book Launch: Before I Was a Critic I Was a Human Being

Join us for the New York City launch of Before I was a Critic I was a Human Being, featuring a conversation between author Amy Fung and Maria Hupfield. Taking a closer examination of settler colonialism and identity through the lens of a national art critic, this collection of essays follows the tangents of a foreign-born perspective and the complexities and complicities in participating in ongoing acts of colonial violence.

Amy Fung is a writer, researcher and curator born in Kowloon, Hong Kong. She spent her formative years in and around Edmonton, Canada, on Treaty 6 Territory. Her writing has been published and commissioned by national and international publications, galleries, museums, festivals, and journals since 2007. This is her first book.

Maria Hupfield is a transdisciplinary artist working at the intersections of industrial felt, performance art and digital media. She is a member the Anishininaabe Nation and off-reserve citizen of Wasauksing First Nation, Ontario, Canada. Her solo exhibition Nine Years Towards the Sun opens at the Heard Museum, Phoenix, Arizona, December 6, 2019.
