Protest and Revolution in West Africa

Ernest Harsch discussed his new book, Burkina Faso: A History of Power, Protest and Revolution, based on more than three decades of research on that West African country. Although Burkina Faso is best known for the brief revolutionary era led by Thomas Sankara in the 1980s, its turbulent history included armed resistance to French conquest, the toppling the first post-independence government and a successful popular insurrection in October 2014 against the authoritarian regime of Blaise Compaoré.
