Reception for documentary film opening: Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four. This film excavates the nightmarish persecution of four Latina lesbians wrongfully convicted of gang-raping two girls. This bizarre case is the first to be adjudicated under new legislation allowing wrongfully convicted innocents to challenge convictions based on debunked scientific evidence called ‘Junk Science’. The film also unravels the sinister interplay of mythology, homophobia, and prosecutorial fervor which led to this modern day witch hunt.
The 4 women who spent years in prison (the “San Antonio 4”) will be there to discuss the film and talk about their ongoing struggle to re-enter society after being exonerated. Members of the National Center for Reason and Justice, who first brought the San Antonio 4 to the attention of the Innocence Project, will also be there to connect the theme to larger political and social context and to raise awareness about other similar cases.
This event has a Google Hangouts video call.
