Woman to World: International Female Writers on Local and Global Identities

Our reading will provide a unique opportunity for the Bluestockings audience to
hear seven poets working across a variety of forms, cultures and borders. Poets hail
from Ireland, Quebec, Cape Verde and locally from NYC, and their work highlights
both specificity and difference through the exploration of universal and culturally
specific concerns. Reflecting on local and international perspectives, their poetry
both confronts global power structures and explores the nuances of gender, race
and sexuality in culturally specific contexts. These poets routinely interrogate how
power and the status quo manifest and affect members of their various communities
in different geographic, cultural and political spaces. Their work questions how
poets can construct new spaces for our various selves in the context the economic
and social systems that surround us.
